Daniel McCarthy is a Cairns local with an intense passion for fishing! He currently captains the Moana III, a 47ft luxury private charter boat which he operates through 'Big Fish Downunder' fishing charters. As one of Cairns' finest fishing charter vessels, the boat has an open permit to operate in waters up to 200nm from the coastline.

Qualified as a masterclass IV captain and MED II (engineering), Daniel McCarthy has been fishing since almost before he could walk and was skippering sportfishing and marlin boats since the age of 21, first taking the wheel over 18 years ago.

He has extensive knowledge of the fishing grounds around Cairns, the Coral Sea, Cape York, the Gulf of Carpentaria and Papua New Guinea for black marlin fishing, sports fishing as well as reef and deep sea fishing.

As president of the Cairns Professional Game Fishing Association, Daniel, his crew and the members of the association are committed to conservation of a clean ocean environment and continue to lead the world in tag and release game fishing.
